So I have seen some failures too, regarding git protocol on GitHub, I thought they were just due to internal proxy issues. Haven't had problems with http/https (and it is faster for me). So I have done what GitHub recommends anyways and changes all the github.com/Xilinx/* URI's to use the https protocol. I have pushed those changes to master.
I would recommend doing this change on the meta-topic and meta-ezynq layers as well (at least for the Xilinx repos).
