Yocto Project Status WW41`21

Stephen Jolley

Current Dev Position: YP 3.4 M4

Next Deadline: 29th Oct. 2021 YP 3.4 M4 release

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.4 rc1 has been built and is heading to QA
  • Patches to master for post-release have started merging, there is a significant queue.
  • CVEs open against master have taken a small but worrying uptick this week.
  • There were some last minute changes to the hash equivalence server around the algorithm used for handling the hashes to try and ensure we get the reuse of sstate objects users would expect. These did delay the release but we believe this was worth doing to allow best use of sstate caches.
  • There were other key changes to the task reproducibility and to the task outhash generation which were included in the release. These should also significantly improve hash equivalence matching and artefact reuse.
  • Intermittent issues continue to rise, some seem to be issues coming from the newer distros we’ve added to the autobuilder (Centos 8 stream, Fedora 34 and Debian 11). Help is very much welcome on these issues. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT

Ways to contribute:

YP 3.4 Milestone Dates:

  • YP 3.4 M4 is in QA
  • YP 3.4 M4 Release date 2021/10/29

Tracking Metrics:

The Yocto Project’s technical governance is through its Technical Steering Committee, more information is available at:

It looks like the gcc version is too old on your host for this to work.

Betreff: How to include PostgreSQL development stuff in SDK?

Hi everybody!

I successfully built an image for an ARM based system running a PostgreSQL server and client by adding the packages "postgresql" and "postgresql-client". However, so far I failed to make the development stuff (libpq-fe.h, pg_config, etc) available in the generated SDK.

Usuallly one uses pg_config to obtain the required include path (pg_config --includedir), the required compiler flags for C and C++ (pg_config --cflags and pg_config --cppflags) as well as the required linker flags (pg_config --libdir and pg_config --ldflags). However, I get the warning during compilation of my own programs:

cc1plus: warning: include location "/usr/include/postgresql" is unsafe for cross-compilation [-Wpoison-system-directories]

Obviously the native pg_config binary of my Ubuntu system is called and hence causes references to the local installation of the libpq-dev package of my Ubuntu system instead of a pg_config binary provided by the SDK. Even worse, the SDK just includes the pg_config binary for the ARM platform, but not for x86_64.

The only way to silence these warnings is to include -Wno-poison-system-directories in my compiler flags. But this is something I really like to avoid. Who knows whether the PostgreSQL development stuff of my local Ubuntu system will always be compatible to the one for the ARM system?

Unfortunately I had no luck including the PostgreSQL development stuff in the SDK. I already tried 'TOOLCHAIN_HOST_TASK_append = " nativesdk-postgresql"', but this ends in an error message like this:

ERROR: Nothing RPROVIDES 'nativesdk-postgresql' (but /opt/PHYTEC_BSPs/yocto_imx7/sources/poky/meta/recipes-core/meta/buildtools-tarball.bb, /opt/PHYTEC_BSPs/yocto_imx7/sources/poky/meta/recipes-core/meta/uninative-tarball.bb RDEPENDS on or otherwise requires it)
NOTE: Runtime target 'nativesdk-postgresql' is unbuildable, removing...
Missing or unbuildable dependency chain was: ['nativesdk-postgresql']
ERROR: Required build target 'fsl-image-qt5' has no buildable providers.
Missing or unbuildable dependency chain was: ['fsl-image-qt5', 'buildtools-tarball', 'nativesdk-postgresql']

Adding 'PACKAGECONFIG_append_pn-nativesdk += " postgresql"' also does not cause the x86_64 binary of pg_config to be included in the SDK. I assume this causes the ARM binary to be included, but this cannot be used on an x86_64 system.

I searched lots of sites for a solution already, but so far I only found hints how to add packages in general, but nothing in respect to this specific issue.

Can anybody please point out what I am doing wrong or what I need to change to solve this issue?

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked at the perf recipe, and its quite involved. Is there a simpler recipie to use as a template? Perhaps one of these?
My intent was just to show how you'd get the source from whatever
kernel you are building,

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/bpftool/bpftool.bb

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/spidev-test/spidev-test.bb

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/cpupower/cpupower.bb

all three of these appear to be basically the same very simple bb file.
Assuming that you don't need to patch the sources directly, any of
those would likely work ... depending on the dependencies and options
of what tool you are building.

Hi all,

I've googled most of the day, but to no avail. How does one compile and
add to the image the daemon usbipd? Is there a bitbake file already for
this? The code is part of the kernel found in the kernel tree:

KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools/usb/usbip/src

and is invoked from the KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools directory by calling

make usb

from:
https://wiki.st.com/stm32mpu/wiki/How_to_build_Linux_kernel_user_space_tools

PC $> cd <Linux_kernel_source_path>/tools
PC $> make <tool>

I would think that there is a preexisting recipe.

There isn't one that I've ever heard of, and the layerindex
(http://layers.openembedded.org/) confirms that nothing registered
with it provides that recipe.

So if you need it, you'd have to create a recipe .. and submit it to
somewhere like meta-openembedded if appropriate.

Have a look at the perf recipe for one of the ways we build tools out
of the kernel source. Something similar will work in this case.

Bruce

thanks,

Chuck

For this test case I was only building in opencl-clang and igc...

If I attempt to build in intel-compute-runtime, iy attempts to make use of igc and I see the following build issue:

Anuj:

Are there any other possible dependencies for the “meta-intel/dynamic-layers/clang-layer/recipes-
opencl” ?

Is this dependent on systemd ?

It appears to builds clean, but fails/faults while booting kernel...

Thanks again,
Steve

Sorry for my ignorance, but I am missing your point, what exactly does
the recipe provide when built, intel-opencl-icd ?, will it pull in igc
?
It will pull in igc. There's a separate recipe for igc in meta-intel.
compute-runtime will provide intel-opencl-icd but the package name is different.

You can try building the recipe.

Thanks,

Anuj

Sorry, I didn't understand the question. If you want to know which
version of OpenCL is supported, please see the README for version that

Anuj:

Are there any other possible dependencies for the “meta-intel/dynamic-layers/clang-layer/recipes-
opencl” ?

Is this dependent on systemd ?

It appears to builds clean, but fails/faults while booting kernel...

Thanks again,
Steve

It will pull in igc. There's a separate recipe for igc in meta-intel.
compute-runtime will provide intel-opencl-icd but the package name is different.

You can try building the recipe.

Sorry, I didn't understand the question. If you want to know which
version of OpenCL is supported, please see the README for version that
you're building. Also see:

extra-cmake-modules-native-5.81.0 Package porting on riscv target using meta-qt5-extra layer #yocto

Hi Guys,

I am facing compile-time issue (extra-cmake-modules-native-5.81.0 ). Using bitbake extra-cmake-modules it's compiled fine. It is dependent on other packages. Using bitbake extra-cmake-modules is compiled success. other dependent package expecting extra-cmake-modules-native.

How can I fix this issue or build time it is going to docs so how I can disable it.  or any patch available gives some suggestions to fix this issue.

I am unable to build an extensible SDK for my RISC-V machine.
Required Details:
Also, I am able to build the normal SDK successfully.
I ran this  for my custom machine "cdac-ooo".

MACHINE=cdac-ooo bitbake core-image-minimal -c populate_sdk_ext

I am attaching the log file with reference to the error.

I also tried using,
SDK_EXT_TYPE = "minimal"

but that gave me an empty sysroots directory without the tool-chain.

Please Let me know what am I missing or how can I rectify this error.

Re: building the kernel's usbipd daemon

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked at the perf recipe, and its quite involved. Is there a simpler recipie to use as a template? Perhaps one of these?

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/bpftool/bpftool.bb

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/spidev-test/spidev-test.bb

meta-openembedded/meta-oe/recipes-kernel/cpupower/cpupower.bb

all three of these appear to be basically the same very simple bb file.

Hi all,

I've googled most of the day, but to no avail. How does one compile and
add to the image the daemon usbipd? Is there a bitbake file already for
this? The code is part of the kernel found in the kernel tree:

KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools/usb/usbip/src

and is invoked from the KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools directory by calling

make usb

from:
https://wiki.st.com/stm32mpu/wiki/How_to_build_Linux_kernel_user_space_tools

PC $> cd <Linux_kernel_source_path>/tools
PC $> make <tool>

I would think that there is a preexisting recipe.
There isn't one that I've ever heard of, and the layerindex
(http://layers.openembedded.org/) confirms that nothing registered
with it provides that recipe.

So if you need it, you'd have to create a recipe .. and submit it to
somewhere like meta-openembedded if appropriate.

Have a look at the perf recipe for one of the ways we build tools out
of the kernel source. Something similar will work in this case.

Bruce

Chuck

Re: [OE-core] How to trigger Yocto Linux /etc/profile or shell scripts in /etc/profile.d without shell logging in?

Hi Jupiter,
To centralize, agreed that you are using systemd, one way I could see is setting the variables in systemd-system.conf using the DefaultEnvironment directive, see: https://freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd-system.conf.html

This states:

----
DefaultEnvironment=

Configures environment variables passed to all executed processes. Takes a space-separated list of variable assignments. See environ(7) for details about environment variables.

Simple "%"-specifier expansion is supported, see below for a list of supported specifiers.

Example:

DefaultEnvironment="VAR1=word1 word2" VAR2=word3 "VAR3=word 5 6"

Sets three variables "VAR1", "VAR2", "VAR3".

----

This should have you variables management in each. Otherwise as you mention one can put in each script with either Environment to have them explicitly enumerated or with EnvironmentFile to read from a file, which may also fit your centralization hopes (but still require one line per startup script at least) and could be further sourced by non-systemd components as well if needed. (https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.exec.html under Environment section)

HTH,
Federico

Understood, here is what I try to figure out. I use several systemd
services to start my tasks, each task is not just a system process, I
found it also has a system environment similar in user login from
/etcprofile, /home/user/.profile, my question is where is a system
environment file that each systemd service runs from?

I also thought that /etc/profile.d files should be automatically
invoked for each user login, but a systemd service does not run
/etc/profile.d files.

Understood, that was what I did originally, I have to run the setup
system environment in each service ExecStart script, that is why I am
looking for a global environment setup file to avoid duplication of
putting my environment scripts in each ExecStart execution file.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

- jupiter

Hi all,

I've googled most of the day, but to no avail. How does one compile and
add to the image the daemon usbipd? Is there a bitbake file already for
this? The code is part of the kernel found in the kernel tree:

KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools/usb/usbip/src

and is invoked from the KERNEL_SRC_PATH/tools directory by calling

make usb

from:
https://wiki.st.com/stm32mpu/wiki/How_to_build_Linux_kernel_user_space_tools

PC $> cd <Linux_kernel_source_path>/tools
PC $> make <tool>

I would think that there is a preexisting recipe.
There isn't one that I've ever heard of, and the layerindex
(http://layers.openembedded.org/) confirms that nothing registered
with it provides that recipe.

So if you need it, you'd have to create a recipe .. and submit it to
somewhere like meta-openembedded if appropriate.

Have a look at the perf recipe for one of the ways we build tools out
of the kernel source. Something similar will work in this case.

Chuck

Yocto Project Newcomer & Unassigned Bugs - Help Needed

Stephen Jolley

All,

The triage team is starting to try and collect up and classify bugs which a newcomer to the project would be able to work on in a way which means people can find them. They're being listed on the triage page under the appropriate heading:

https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Bug_Triage#Newcomer_Bugs  Also please review: https://www.openembedded.org/wiki/How_to_submit_a_patch_to_OpenEmbedded and how to create a bugzilla account at: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/createaccount.cgi

The idea is these bugs should be straight forward for a person to help work on who doesn't have deep experience with the project.  If anyone can help, please take ownership of the bug and send patches!  If anyone needs help/advice there are people on irc who can likely do so, or some of the more experienced contributors will likely be happy to help too.

Also, the triage team meets weekly and does its best to handle the bugs reported into the Bugzilla. The number of people attending that meeting has fallen, as have the number of people available to help fix bugs. One of the things we hear users report is they don't know how to help. We (the triage team) are therefore going to start reporting out the currently 395 unassigned or newcomer bugs.

We're hoping people may be able to spare some time now and again to help out with these.  Bugs are split into two types, "true bugs" where things don't work as they should and "enhancements" which are features we'd want to add to the system.  There are also roughly four different "priority" classes right now, “3.4”, “3.5, "3.99" and "Future", the more pressing/urgent issues being in "3.4" and then “3.5”.

Please review this link and if a bug is something you would be able to help with either take ownership of the bug, or send me (sjolley.yp.pm@...) an e-mail with the bug number you would like and I will assign it to you (please make sure you have a Bugzilla account).  The list is at: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Bug_Triage_Archive#Unassigned_or_Newcomer_Bugs

Thanks,
